Chapter Nine

Archias didn’t like being alone. It gave him far too much time to think. There was no one else he desired to spend time with, either. He wanted Jade and only Jade.

His heart swelled and raced. His stomach fluttered. He smiled more than he could ever remember. And it was all simply from Jade’s presence. There was something special about Jade Blevins, something that warmed him and chased away the usual cold.

He hadn’t set out to fall in love with the man. Somewhere along the way, Jade had burrowed into his heart, broken down his defenses, and settled in with permanency. Yes, against his better judgment, he had gone and fallen in love.

For three millennia, he’d held little optimism of ever escaping his prison. Now, however, hope blossomed. Of course, Jade would have to love him back.

He wasn’t too concerned, though. Over the past few days, he’d caught snippets of Jade’s thoughts. They were twisted and snarled, confused and uncertain, but all contained the same central theme—his feelings for Archias.

The roar of an engine and the sound of tires skidding across the gravel driveway interrupted his contemplations. He’d spoken to Jade not long ago, and it would be several more hours before his draga was home. Rising slowly, he tilted his head in confusion as he stared toward the front window, unsure of who would be visiting so late.

Footsteps pounded across the porch, and the front door burst open as Jade stumbled into the living room. Their eyes locked, and Jade hurdled the sofa to launch himself into Archias’s arms.

Supporting his weight easily, Archias held him tightly, cradling the back of his head. “Draga, what is wrong? What has happened to you?” He stroked and petted, speaking softly, trying to soothe his distressed lover.

Jade shook his head, but didn’t speak a word. Burying his face more insistently into Archias’s neck, he held on to him for dear life as he trembled from head to toe.

Worried by the strange behavior, Archias eased down on the sofa and repositioned Jade in his lap. It took a little doing, but he finally managed to pry the man far enough away to peer into his red-rimmed eyes. He searched Jade’s face, trying to determine why his lover seemed so upset without actually delving into his thoughts.

The left side of Jade’s jaw appeared swollen and bruised, and he reached up to gently cup the injured flesh, though white-hot rage boiled his blood. “I will kill him.” It didn’t even matter who “him” was. No one would lay their hands on his man and live to tell about it.

Jade shook his head again, but remained mute. “Tell me who did this to you,” Archias demanded, the warrior in him calling for blood.

Jade’s thoughts pushed at him insistently until Archias could no longer fight against them. Images of an attractive cowboy chased each other around Jade’s mind—dark green eyes, a chiseled jaw, and hard, tightly packed muscles showcased in impossibly tight jeans. Then came bits and
